Ask any Kolkata family what they need most in a new home, and the answer is almost always "more storage". Between everyday clothes, office wear, a growing collection of sarees and Punjabi kurtas, winter quilts, festival outfits and suitcases, wardrobes fill up faster than anyone expects.

A good wardrobe is not just a big cupboard. Its doors, finish, interior layout and material all decide how easy it is to use and how long it lasts in Kolkata's humid weather. This guide walks you through each decision.

Sliding vs Hinged Wardrobes

Sliding wardrobes

Sliding doors move along a track, so they do not need clearance to open. That makes them ideal for compact bedrooms where the bed is close to the wardrobe, which is common in Kolkata flats.

Pros: Saves space, looks sleek and modern, and works well with mirrors and glass panels.

Cons: Only part of the wardrobe is accessible at a time. Tracks need occasional cleaning. Good sliding systems cost more.

Hinged wardrobes

Hinged doors open outwards like a regular cupboard.

Pros: Full access to the interior, lower cost, and easy to repair and adjust.

Cons: Needs about 2 feet of clear space in front, which may not be available in small rooms.

Our recommendation: Choose sliding doors when the walking space in front of the wardrobe is under 2.5 feet. Otherwise, a hinged wardrobe gives better value and accessibility.

Choosing the Right Material for Kolkata

The carcass, or the main body of the wardrobe, should handle humidity without warping. We recommend:

  • HDHMR or BWR plywood for wardrobes against external walls or in ground-floor rooms.
  • MR-grade plywood is acceptable for wardrobes on internal walls in well-ventilated rooms, but it is not our first choice.
  • Edge banding on all exposed edges, applied by machine.

Always leave a small gap between the wardrobe and an external wall to allow airflow, and consider ventilation grooves to prevent musty smells during the monsoon. Our monsoon-proof interiors guide has more tips.

Shutter Finishes Compared

  • Laminate: The most popular choice. It is durable, affordable and available in countless colours and textures, including wood grains, stone and fabric finishes.
  • Acrylic: A high-gloss, mirror-like finish that brightens a room. It shows fingerprints, so it suits adult bedrooms better than children's rooms.
  • PU paint: A smooth, seamless finish in any colour, often used for a premium, handle-less look.
  • Veneer: Real wood that brings warmth and natural grain. It needs polishing and is more sensitive to humidity.
  • Glass and mirror: Fluted, frosted or tinted glass panels add elegance. A full-length mirror on one shutter saves space for a separate dressing mirror.

Many clients mix finishes, such as laminate for most shutters with one glass or mirror panel as a feature.

Plan the Inside, Not Just the Outside

The interior layout decides how much you can actually store. Before designing, list what each person needs to store. Then include:

  1. Long hanging space for dresses, long kurtas and coats.
  2. Short hanging space, usually double-stacked, for shirts and folded trousers.
  3. Drawers for innerwear, accessories and folded T-shirts.
  4. Saree organisers or pull-out trays to keep sarees flat and visible.
  5. A locker for jewellery and documents.
  6. A tie, belt and accessory tray.
  7. A shoe rack or pull-out at the bottom, if space allows.
  8. Loft storage up to the ceiling for luggage and winter bedding.

Interior LED lights that switch on when the door opens are inexpensive and very useful.

Handles and Hardware

Handles can be a design feature. Slim profile handles, recessed G-profile handles and brass knobs each create a different look. For hardware, invest in soft-close hinges, smooth tandem drawers and a good-quality sliding system from a trusted brand. Cheap hardware is the most common cause of complaints in the first two years.

Wardrobe Costs in Kolkata (2026)

Wardrobes are usually priced per square foot of the front area. As a rough guide:

  • Laminate hinged wardrobes: approximately ₹1,400–₹2,000 per sq ft.
  • Laminate sliding wardrobes: approximately ₹1,800–₹2,600 per sq ft.
  • Acrylic or PU finishes: ₹2,400 per sq ft and above.

A typical 7 x 8 feet wardrobe with a loft will therefore cost somewhere between ₹80,000 and ₹1.8 lakh, depending on the material, finish and interior accessories. See our Kolkata interior cost guide for the full picture.

Usually 15–20 days for manufacturing after design approval, and one to two days for installation.
