A well-designed false ceiling changes how a room feels. It hides wiring and beams, adds layered lighting, makes a room feel cooler and more finished, and gives a flat a premium look for a reasonable cost. It is also one of the most requested services among our clients in Kolkata.
A badly planned ceiling, however, can make a room feel low and heavy, crack within a year, or sag after a monsoon leak. This guide explains how to choose the right material, what it costs in Kolkata in 2026, and which designs work best in each room.
Gypsum vs POP: Which Is Better for Kolkata?
Gypsum board ceilings
Gypsum ceilings are made from factory-made boards fixed onto a galvanised metal frame. They are quick to install, give a smooth and uniform finish, and create less mess on site. Moisture-resistant gypsum boards are available for kitchens and bathrooms. For most flats in Kolkata, gypsum is our default recommendation.
POP (Plaster of Paris) ceilings
POP is mixed on site and applied over a mesh and frame. It allows more freedom for curves and intricate mouldings, which is why it is still popular in some traditional homes. It takes longer to dry, especially in humid weather, creates more dust and depends heavily on the skill of the craftsman.
Other options
- PVC panels: Waterproof and inexpensive, good for bathrooms and balconies, but less premium in living areas.
- Wooden ceilings or slats: Used as accents over a dining table or a bed wall to add warmth.
- Grid ceilings: Mostly for offices and commercial spaces.
False Ceiling Cost in Kolkata (2026)
Prices are generally quoted per square foot of ceiling area. Here are indicative ranges:
- Simple gypsum peripheral ceiling: approximately ₹85–110 per sq ft.
- Gypsum ceiling with cove and two levels: approximately ₹110–150 per sq ft.
- Designer ceilings with wooden accents or profile lighting: ₹150 per sq ft and above.
- POP ceilings: usually similar to or slightly below gypsum for basic work, and higher for detailed mouldings.
Lighting such as LED strips, spotlights and profile lights is usually quoted separately. Painting the ceiling is often included in a full-home painting package. See our full Kolkata interior cost guide for how the ceiling fits into an overall budget.
Room-by-Room Ceiling Ideas
Living room
A peripheral ceiling with a central recessed area and warm cove lighting is a timeless choice. For a modern look, add slim profile light lines that run across the ceiling and continue down a wall. If your living and dining are one long hall, use two different ceiling zones to separate them visually.
Bedroom
Keep bedroom ceilings calm. A simple drop above the bed with indirect lighting creates a cosy mood, and a wooden strip over the bed wall adds warmth. Avoid bright downlights directly above the pillow area.
Kitchen
Use moisture-resistant gypsum and keep the design simple so it is easy to clean. Plan the chimney duct route before the ceiling is closed. Recessed panel lights give even, shadow-free light.
Puja room
A small dome or recessed ceiling with a soft glow above the mandir looks beautiful. Some families like a CNC-cut jali panel lit from behind.
Bathroom
Use PVC or moisture-resistant gypsum with an access panel for the geyser and plumbing.
Tips to Get It Right
- Check ceiling height first. Most Kolkata flats have 9.5 to 10 feet ceilings. A false ceiling usually drops 6 to 9 inches. In rooms under 9 feet, keep only a peripheral ceiling.
- Fix leaks before you start. In older buildings and top-floor flats, any seepage from above will stain and sag a new ceiling. Get the slab waterproofed first.
- Finalise furniture and lighting together. The ceiling should frame your TV wall, bed and dining table.
- Plan fan positions. Ceiling fans need a secure hook fixed to the slab, not to the gypsum.
- Choose warm, dimmable lighting. A 3000K warm-white light feels comfortable in homes. Add a neutral light where you need task lighting.
- Insist on a proper frame. Use galvanised channels and quality boards from known brands such as Gyproc.
Will a False Ceiling Make My Room Hotter?
Not if it is planned well. In fact, the air gap between the slab and the gypsum acts as a layer of insulation, which helps top-floor flats in Kolkata's summer. LED lights produce very little heat. What matters is keeping the ceiling at a sensible height and making sure the fan is not too close to the ceiling.
